Los Trabajos Y Las Noches

by Frank Carlberg

about

ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Argentine vocalist Roxana Amed and New York-based pianist-composer Frank Carlberg first
collaborated in 2011 working with material ranging from jazz standards to songs by Argentine folk
music composer Cuchi Leguizamon. Soon after this first experience, Amed introduced Carlberg to
the works of some Argentine poets including Alejandra Pizarnik. After this thorough research, grew
the idea to create a concert length piece featuring Pizarnik's poetry. The result is "La sombra de su
sombra'', a 10-part song cycle for voice(s) and piano, with music by Carlberg. The poems chosen
for the piece are from "Tree of Diana'' (1962), "Other poems" (1959) and "The works and the nights"
(1965). "La sombra de su sombra'' with an overreaching arc, was infused with themes central to
Pizarnik's work; silence, loneliness, love and death. Half of the cycle was recorded by Amed and
Carlberg in March, 2012 in Brooklyn, New York. This session also featured guest vocalist Christine
Correa. The rest of the music was composed over the summer in New York and recorded in Buenos
Aires in late August, 2012. There was also a small preview of the music with the performance of four
of the songs at Teatro San Martin Main Hall in Buenos Aires in September, 2012.
A second part of this exploration came right after the first album but it wasn’t till January 2022 that
Amed and Carlberg would get to the studio to record the eleven-piece work.
Carlberg wrote this time for a quintet and Adam Kolker (tenor sax and Bb, bass and alto clarinet),
Simón Willson (upright bass) and Michael Sarin (drums) joined the duo.
They recorded at Big Orange Sheep studio in Brooklyn.
